Meet Dusty — Sunshine Coast Local

Wurtulla, Sunshine Coast
Born in Townsville and now firmly planted on the Sunshine Coast, Dusty's been making up for lost time since he first got on a board in 2020. These days he's in the water almost every day — and it shows.
Give us a bit of your background — where you grew up and how you ended up on the Coast?
I was born on the south side of Townsville and didn't know how to surf until early 2020. Now I'm living on the Sunshine Coast happily and surfing almost every day.
When do you feel most at home in the ocean?
Usually surfing with mates or family — but sometimes when I need a solo surf, I'll go. Both have their place.
What's your go-to when the waves are average?
Usually I'll go skating at Dicky's or Alex skatepark, hang out with mates, and hit the gym in the arvo.

Run us through a day that feels like a win.
Waking up early, light offshore, no clouds in sight, cold and perfect. Get a morning surf in, midday skate through to arvo, then a sunset surf to finish it off. Hard to beat.
How did surfing become such a big part of your life?
My dad introduced me to a surfboard. At first I didn't really like it — but my siblings were both into it so I had to join in. And now here we are.
Who's pushed your surfing the most?
My dad. From showing me new tricks to calling me out on the biggest wave of the day — and watching me get smoked. He's always pushed me.
What kind of waves do you naturally gravitate toward?
When the wind goes light onshore — that sweet spot that's perfect for everything. Barrels to airs, whatever's on offer.
Best session you can remember?
A secret spot in Krui, Indonesia. A-frame into a super end section, nature all around, not another person in sight. Hard to top that one.
How would you describe the vibe at your local?
Wurtulla's a great spot — locals are good and laid-back. Some of the weekend warriors get a bit competitive, but that's everywhere, haha.
What's something non-surfers don't see?
How good it feels to land manoeuvres consistently. I think that's one of the best feelings going around.
What made Habitat stand out to you?
The way the designs are made, the quality of the gear, and how good the team is to each other. That all stood out.
Favourite Habitat piece right now?
Honestly can't decide — the shirts, hats and towels all suit everything. That's a good problem to have.
