Meet Mia: Sunny Coast Soul

Meet Mia: Salt, strength & sunshine
Born and raised on the Sunshine Coast, Mia’s story is woven into the stretch of coastline from Pelican Waters to Moffat, now calling Currimundi home.
Tough, grounded, and community-driven — we’re stoked to welcome her to the Habitat team.
Where It All Began
My dad had always been a surfer and shaped boards for 20 years. None of my other family surfed, so he was the one who introduced me to it all. Since getting on a board, I never looked back.
I love the ocean and everything about it. The community and the people I’ve met through surfing can’t be compared to anything else.
Influences
The biggest influence on my surfing has to be my dad. He got me in the water when I was only a little grom — supporting me, shaping new boards and inspiring me to keep going.
Windansea Boardriders have also been amazing. Even though I’ve only been there for a year, it already feels like family. Such a supportive crew makes me enjoy surfing even more.
A Moment That Stuck
One session that’s stayed with me was getting absolutely beaten up by rocks.
It was my first surf on a new board and there was a decent swell running. I paddled in and my leg rope got stuck under a rock. I couldn’t free myself and just kept getting hammered by waves.
After ditching the board and scrambling up to higher rocks, I looked down and both my legs were stained red. I had completely lacerated them.
But honestly? What bothered me most was my new board being all beaten up. I wasn’t happy.
Even though it shook me up, I was back out there the next day. My legs are still covered in scars, but I see them as a symbol of resilience.
Home Breaks
I’ve always been a Sunny Coast local — moving between Pelican Waters, Moffat Beach and now Currimundi.
Favourite banks and spots would have to be Ann Street Reef and the beachies along Currimundi and Wurtulla.
The people and community here are amazing and will always be considered home.
Surf Style
I’d describe my style as fun.
I like to keep it powerful but neat. I love a good snap on a fun section, but I also enjoy carving down the line on a rolling wave.
When I’m surfing, I’m always challenging myself — improving on what I know and working to better myself.
Joining Habitat
It’s great to be coming on board with Habitat. Local businesses are so important to me and I’m so grateful to have one behind me.
The support makes me want to keep improving my surfing and getting out in the water — even on the days when I don’t feel like it.
Life Outside the Lineup
If I’m not surfing, you’ll probably still find me at the beach — soaking up the sun or going for a swim.
I’m also studying paramedicine at university three times a week. And if I’m not there, I’m working at Dicky Beach Supporters Club in the bar, bistro or reception.
Looking Ahead
Over the next 12 months I’m hoping to continue my paramedicine studies, meet new people and save some money while still staying in the water.
I’d love to get away and travel too — maybe New Zealand for some snow in winter if I can make it work.
I’m super excited to see what new things Habitat comes out with and for the journey ahead.
